Cornish Pottery Gems

Writer's picture: Jana GillfillanJana Gillfillan

Cornwall is well known for it's art, and there is a thriving community of potters there too. While a painting can often be very pricey, a ceramic piece (be it functional or decorative) can be much more affordable and bring every bit as much pleasure (if not more!). I'd like to introduce you to the work of a few of my favourite Cornish potters:

  • Lucy Joines is the creative talent behind

    https://www.lucyjoinesceramics.co.uk.

Her colourful and playful ceramics draw on

wild nature. Hares, owls and other creatures

symbolize the magic of childhood. Her work is

joyful and never fails to delight.

makes decorations from

her garden studio on the north Cornish coast. Her colours are exquisite, and the forms reveal the delicate beauty of the porcelain she uses.

Nicky describes her art as the expression

of the stories she wants to tell: her figures are

imbued with myth, magic and imagination

and are ultimately about being human.

Her unique style is as intriuging as it is beautiful.

makes pots that elevate the everyday to the celebratory. Her pots invite us to savour our simple daily rituals and to celebrate the meals we share with friends and family.

Echoes of the calming hues of the Cornish countryside together with the crispness of the African sky (reflecting the dual influences of her background) are discernible in her pots.
