Welcome to Gilliflower Pottery
My name is Jana Gilfillan. I live and work in rural Cornwall where I create handmade pottery in my studio, named after our apple orchard.
You are most welcome to visit my studio by arrangement. You are likely to be welcomed by our friendly spaniel, and find me covered in clay. If you would like to arrange a visit, please contact me
I enjoy working on commissions. It's a wonderful way to get to know someone, and create something personal. Please get in touch if you'd like to discuss this with me
The Fireflower range is a collection of pots inspired by my South African youth. The wildfires that sweep through the Fynbos on the mountains every few years are strikingly beautiful in their destructive force, and the charred architectural remains of the plants are equally stunning. The fires also have a regenerative power in that some of the seeds need the intense heat to germinate, and other plants need the flames to release their seeds. Another important influence from my childhood is the beautiful rounded African pots. These are often black, frequently unglazed and can be decorated with simple geometric patterns
The Summer bird collection is a joy to make, and I hope it is equally uplifting to use. The muted green and blue evoke the colours of the Cornish countryside, and the universal bird motif speaks to me of freedom and transcendence. I use slip (liquid clay) stained with oxides to decorate each one individually, so no two will ever be exactly the same.
Treating the environment with respect, is a value close to my heart, both when practicing my craft, and on a personal level. I am a member of MAKE Southwest's Green Maker Initiative, of which you can read more here. Pottery is an energy-hungry craft and I am always striving to improve my use of resources. Read more about the ways I do this, from the materials I use, to what you can expect regarding packaging, here.
